Modern Hexagon

Finished! A modern hexagon wall hanging. One day before the year end and the Canadian postal rates go up. It was a challenge.

Only 7 more days till Christmas, so don't forget to turn back your scale 10 lbs at midnight.

Boots

These boots and cowboy hat are for a friend that is now past president. I was to make something representative of Calgary Alberta, where she lives. This was way too fun to make.

UFO Holiday Train

The extra, yes a little extra, time has been spent on ufo's.
Depending on the layout of the blocks, I either need another 40 - 3" quarter square triangle blocks or there is 40  - 3" quarter square triangle blocks too many.

This is the 15th year that the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train has travelled across Canada. At each stop, they collect food for the food bank, have things to do for the kids and a concert going on. This year it stopped at a light rail station on the outskirts of Calgary. Even though it was -17C or 0 F what fun!!!

Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Drifting

Hey everyone, Quiltmaker is giving away a set of all eight volumes of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks to one lucky winner who leaves a comment on Quiltmaker's website.

Last post I was complaining about shovelling. Well not now! This house is in Langdon, 20 minutes east of Calgary.

Snow Day Sew Day

Snow day yesterday; sew day yesterday. If your Canadian you can definitely relate to Bob and Doug McKenzie of the Great White North.

Yesterday, not once, nor twice but thrice, the driveway looked like this, then this. Blizzard!

This morning, back at it again. Hopefully this is done for the rest of the year. In past few years, I've threatened to only shovel the sidewalk and a path up to the front door. Well, this year I'm not shovelling the bay closest to the front door. Now, the threat is to switch the car to the last bay and move the van to the middle bay and only shovel the last bay because the van will easily drive through the snow.
As for sew day, voila.

#799 Which Way Chinook

Is it true! Pinch, pinch, ouch!
It's almost last but not least - they saved the best for almost last! Well, that's what I'm going with. :o)
799 that is a great number. It's lucky number 7 + Gretsky 99, for those hockey fans out there.
'Which Way' #799, volume 8, Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks.

See page 14 for the Which Way quilt and page 86 Brownstone where Quiltmaker tested the block.

Some postings have mentioned 'Chinook'. On last Tuesday's hike, there was a Chinook arch coming in from over the Rocky Mountains. This arch eventually moves east bring very warm weather. For Calgarians, it raises the temperature so it feels like spring and melts much of the snow. Sometimes there can be a very dramatic rise in temperature, i.e. from 30 below F to 30 above F. But, as all good things must come to an end, winter will be back on Monday. How wonderful!

Happy Grey Cup Day

It's so great when the Chinook winds come to Calgary. Everybody is happier and the winter isn't so bad after all. It was a spring like day yesterday and is starting to be another spring day today.
Nothing makes a sports quilter happier than piecing a new design and watching/listening to the Canadian Football League, CFL, game. What's even better is that this game is for all the marbles. It's the Grey Cup 2013 game today.

The backyard has been pretty exciting lately. There has been a Red-Shafted Flicker visiting. It's either been feasting on the crabapple tree or drumming on the house decoration.

Snow Weekend

Ah, how wonderful it is to see gorgeous sunrises reflecting in the lake. But, thanks to a cold front from Alaska, yes, Alaska USA, it snowed all weekend and the lake has started freezing over.

Snow weekends are a great incentive to create. It took what seems like all weekend to sew these 12" blocks. Between not reading instructions carefully, adding 1+1 = 3, redesigning block, and sewing the wrong pieces together, each block took 3 hours. Stop and take a break you say! Can't do that. That would be silly. Have to keep piecing.

AHHHH Done!

Remembering

It's a quiet day, a reflecting day, today. Watching it snow. Listening to the Canada geese fly overhead. Reflecting on all the Canadians that gave of themselves to give us freedom and peace.

Treasure Block Winter

It is so grand to find a old treasure when looking for the beginning of a new quilt.

What a difference a week makes! On the fourth day of vacation, it snowed at home and melted the next day. Hooray, I missed the snow. Not! It snowed the next day after getting home. Everything was blue or white at dusk.
